Ring in the New Year

Well, the new year is upon us, and you know what that means? Well, nothing really except that we will be writing '08 after the date instead of '07, and this year is a leap year...Nothing is going to be different when we wake up (except, i have a feeling that a few of you may have a hangover)...

why am i writing this, you may ask yourself? because i am really upset, thats why...

dont get me wrong, there are a few things about 2008 that i am excited about (i'll get to those later) but there is just so much going on (or not going on) to be disappointed about...am i talking about our current adminisrtation, or current world affairs in general? am i talking about the current state of the mainstream church? global warming, world hunger? no!

i am talking about flying cars, hover boards, and time travel...

what a let down that this stuff doesnt exist yet. the way that the media portrayed things in movies and t.v. shows was that the world was going to be a vastly different place in 2000 and beyond than it is now...when i was a little kid i thought for sure that by 1999 i would be living on the fringe with some rebel group fighting the klingons and robots that had taken over...i imagined that i could make a quick get away in my flying car or go back in time before anything had gone wrong and change it...i thought that the whole y2k catastrophy that never even happened was going to be the catalyst for it all...every new year that comes and inevitably goes seems to disappoint the 8 year old inside of me that is still half-way expecting these things to happen...

did you guys know that i had opened up my own detective agency when i was 8? i ran a covert operation out of my room and used the most state of the art spy-tech equipment available on the market (i.e. whatever mom and dad could afford) For some reason my parents were the only ones to ever hire me, and the only form of payment that i recieved from them was my $2 weekly allowence...anyway, i had deduced by my extensive detective work (such as watching movies) that we would be living in a very robotic world...i guess i was wrong on that case...

now that i've aired my grievances, on to what i am excited about...

first off, i am excited about may 13th marking 2 years of marriage...i am also excited that amanda will finally be done with school, and that we can move to portland...although i stay very intentionally out of politics, it is nice to know that bush will be out of office soon, and that even if the new president turns out to be as big a yahoo as bush, im sure he/she will be more elloquent and we will have a new face to look at...

for new years eve, amanda and i will be eating at little t's with some friends and then we will be off to home to watch some movies and celebrate new years away from any drunken revelry...

until 2008,

john

Subscribing

I put in an earlier post that i was going to add an rss feed icon so that anyone could subscribe...i am an idiot and my brother pointed out that it was unnecessary to do that because there is a subscribe option at the bottom of the page...so, if for some odd reason you want to subscribe, just click on it and follow the directions...booya and good night

Babies and trashbag toilets

So my brother is having another kid, which will be kid #3...wow! I can't even imagine having one kid at this stage in life...then again, i think of my parents and by the time they were my age, my brother was 6 and i was 4...no thanks...

i dont know why i posted that...anyway

has anyone else heard of the lakota sioux nation declaring themselves to be an autonomous nation? you can read about it here...

is this true or some great hoax? if it is, why is there not a huge amount of press on this? this is a really big deal...they are saying that they will issue their own passports and drivers liscenses...weird...

in other news, my friend in chicago just told me that his plumbing is all jacked up so he has resorted to draping a trashbag into the toilet and, well, you know the rest...

Slow day at work

So i am in the process of figuring out this blog thing and i think i like it...i plan on adding video blogs from time to time and an rss feed so that people can subscribe to it...this seems to be a better approach to staying connected with people while avoiding the crap that goes along with myspace and other such "social networking" websites...

So, the new year is only a couple of days away and the the leap year begins...i am usually not one for new years resolutions, but this year i think that i will have a few...

  1. Stop using myspace- this should need no explanation
  2. Buy as little packaged food as possible-I went to one of those "measure your ecological footprint" sites (can't remember the address) and although my lifestyle ranked significantly lower than the average american (because i'm vegan, i recycle, compost, bike ,walk, and take public transportation instead of driving, etc.) it still estimates that we would need 1.6 planets earths to completely sustain exsistance if everyone lived at my level...so in an effort to make even less of an impact, i plan on trying to cut out unnecessary packaging on things like food.
  3. Have at least one phone free day a week- i have started using sunday as this day and it is amazing how nice it is to cut out an almost constant distraction for an entire day...
  4. Start exercising again- me and amanda plan on getting memberships to the YWCA...
  5. General improvement- I'm sure that there is a ton of stuff that i could/should change or improve upon that i am not thinking of. I think that the general theme of 2008 is going to be slowing down, simplifying my life, spending more time on meaningful things , and cutting back on distractions.
I have also decided that when we move to portland, i am going to get a giant dog.
